Degradation begins with a simple synth melody gradually building in a looper, which then slowly dissolves into an ambient haze through layers of live processing.
The piece explores a form of narrative I’ve been interested in for a while now: one in which a central sonic process (in this case, the degradation of a piece of material) becomes the core focus of the work, rather than the unfolding of other forms of narrative through lyrics, or theme and variation, etc. I find this form of experimental electronic music to be a great creative medium for this type of narrative, as it focuses so strongly on timbre, which is where, in my opinion, some of the most interesting forms of transformation and evolution can happen.
Much love,
Pat
